Training of Trainers

Training of Trainers (TOT)

The Training of Trainers (TOT) has long been a popular approach of organizations and states seeking to develop in house capability to provide training on demand. The proximal goal of a TOT is to develop and / or enhance the knowledge and skills of TOT participants to deliver training workshops on a specific topic or content area.

Achieving this short term goal enables an individual, organization or state to achieve and maintain the longer term goal of being able to provide (in house) training on the identified topic e.g., the correct administration and application of the Addiction Severity Index – (ASI), a standardized, semi structured screening and assessment instrument to the behavioral health care workforce within the state.

Training of Trainer Workshops are available on the following topics:

  • The Addiction Severity Index (ASI)
  • The Comprehensive Adolescent Severity Inventory (CASI)
  • The American Society of Addiction Medicines Criteria.
  • Recovery Training and Self Help (RTSH), a proven and effective relapse prevention program.
  • Cue Extinction, a proven and effective relapse prevention program.

ASI Training of Facilitators (TOF)
The process for conducting a training of facilitators (TOF) is very similar to that of the training of trainers; however, instead of expecting TOT candidates to learn a tremendous amount of ASI specific content, in addition to learning how to deliver the workshop, TOF candidates are taught how to facilitate an ASI workshop utilizing a product called ASI – TV. ASI – TV, is ASI training on DVD.

The Training on DVD Series is modeled after the standard 2-day ASI training. The series, which was originally designed as a self-training, is essentially an abbreviated version of the standard 2-day training workshop. More specifically, Training on DVD provides a didactic presentation of introductory information regarding the development and usefulness of the ASI, followed with a detailed presentation on appropriate administration and coding of the ASI interview on a section-by-section basis. Included in the series is an interview tape modeling the correct use of the ASI.

The ASI Training of Facilitators Model was first used in response to the National Institutes on Drug Abuse (NIDA) concerns regarding how they were going to ensure that ASI interviewers in the NIDA Clinical Trial Network (CTN), representing CTN Nodes from all around the country were going to receive a standardized, valid and reliable training on the correct administration of the Addiction Severity Index (ASI).

While the process for the TOT and TOF models are almost identical, the difference in their effectiveness is not. The TOF model is the more effective model of the two, increasing both the reliability and validity of information provided during an ASI training workshop. Using the ASI – Training on DVD Series, TOF candidates can focus more on facilitating learning, and less focused and worried on memorizing content.
